Levi’s® Original Music is proud to be sponsoring an artistic initiative that gives South African artists the opportunity to display and sell their work to a wide and eager audience. It’s called PrintSLAM, and it’s not only the first ever annual poster art print exhibition in South Africa, it’s part of the OppiKoppi festival over the weekend of 9, 10 and 11 August and the ancillary Johannesburg and Cape Town events.
Although the objective is to create an annual platform for poster art print artists to showcase their works, this initial year is not limited to screen printing, but is open to all forms of printing, including digital prints. PrintSLAM is a celebration of the incredible artistic talent that exists in our country, and a platform for this talent to start getting itself out there and noticed.
There’s a whole selection process to ensure that the quality of PrintSLAM is maintained, but in short, all artists need to submit at least 3 artworks for consideration. These can be emailed, but should be in small formats for selection purposes. The entrants will be whittled down to between 10 and 30 artists, and these individuals will then need to supply at least five different prints for display. These artworks should be relevant to the atmosphere and personalities of the festivals, bands or live entertainment world. Although the artist can choose to produce more, a minimum of 10 copies of each print must be made. These will go on sale at the artist’s own price, although it is recommended to sell them for R150.00 per print. Prints should be kept to A2 or smaller, but if the work demands a different size, then these cases will be considered. Artists will retain all rights to the works although the festival organisers are allowed to list the artists and use copies of the artworks for marketing and display purposes. Artists that make the final cut will receive a double entry ticket to either of the Johannesburg, OppiKoppi or Cape Town events.
“PrintSLAM is such a cool concept,” says Levi’s® Brand Manager Mike Leslie. “It’s another opportunity for Levi’s® Original Music to get behind popular youth culture, stimulate the arts and interface with our customer base on a level that they relate to on an everyday basis”. So if you identify with the philosophy of PrintSLAM and want to start getting your work out there, then send some examples of your art to the addresses below and stand a chance of being a part of this eye-opening project.
